Electromagnetic Spectrum (EM) |
The entire wavelengths or frequencies of the electromagnetic radiation extending from radio waves to gamma rays. |
The entire wavelengths or frequencies of the electromagnetic radiation is the EM.
Ex. Our eyes detect visible light. Fireflies, light bulbs, and stars all emit visible light. |
|
Radiant Energy |
The energy of electromagnetic waves. |
When heat is given off then it is called radiant energy.
Ex. The heat emitted from a campfire. |
|
Probability |
The likelihood of something happening. |
The likelihood that something will happen is the probability.
Ex. Throwing dice or tossing a coin. |
|
Electron Cloud
|
Used to describe where the electrons are located around the nucleus of an atom.
|
The place electrons can be found is in the electron cloud.
Ex. The electrons place. |
|
Emission Spectrum |
A spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source. |
Every element gives off a fingerprint of light through emission spectrum.
Ex. Blue light has a higher energy and therefore a higher frequency and shorter wavelength than red light. |
|
Quantum Mechanics |
The motion of a subatomic particles close to the velocities of light. |
A motion of subatomic particles at velocities close to that of light is quantum mechanics.
Ex. Something moving at the speed of light. |
|
Classical (Newtonian) Mechanics |
The behavior of visible objects at ordinary velocities. |
The classical mechanics is the description of behavior of visible objects at ordinary velocities.
Ex. A car going 60 mph. |
|
Lewis Electron Dot Diagrams |
Diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pair of electrons that may exist in a molecule. |
Lewis dot diagram shows the bonding between atoms of a molecule.
Ex. H-O-H
|
|
Momentum |
The quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. |
When an object is in motion it has momentum.
Ex. A team that has a lot of momentum is really on the move and is going to be hard to stop. |
|
Wave-Particle Duality of Nature |
The property of particles behaving as waves and the property of waves behaving as particles as well as waves. |
When a particle acts like a wave that is called wave-particle duality of nature.
Ex. Short wavelengths are high energy gamma-rays and x-rays, long wavelengths are radio waves. |
