What special properties do gases have that liquids and solids do not?
Gas molecules are free to move around and will take up the size and shape of its container.
In order to have an idea of the amount of matter in a gas sample, what do u need to know?
the temperature and pressure of the gas
What type of units is forced measured in (chemistry)?
Kilopascals (kPa)
millimeters of mercury (mm of Hg)
atmospheres (atm)
What is standard atmospheric pressure in each of the 3 units of pressure?
101.3 kPa; 760 mm of Hg; or 1.0 atm
What temperature scale is used in doing math problems involving gases?
Kelvin
Why must we use the Kelvin scale?
the celcius scale can result in negative numbers
What is the formula for converting Celsius temperatures to Kelvin?
K= C+273
What is standard temperature?
273 K or 0 celcius
What does STP stand for?
standard temperature and pressure
Summarize Boyle's Law
The volume of a sample of gas is inversly proportional to its pressure, if the temperature remains constant.
What does this mean?
As the pressure increases the volume of a gas decreases. As the pressure decreases, the volume of a gas increases.
What is the formula for Boyle's Law?
P1V1=P2V2
Summarize Charles' law
the volume of a quantity of gas, held at constant pressure, varies directly with the kelvin temperature
What does this mean (Charles)
as the temperature increases, the volume increases. AS the temp decreases the volume decreases
What is the formula for Charles's law?
V1/T1=V2/T2
What is the formula for the Combined Gas law?
V2=V1P1T2/P2T1
