Sends a single packet to a target system, which should, reply, confirming the existence of a basic connection.
ping:
The default mail server for several Linux distributions such as Mandrake and SuSE. Simpler to configure then Sendmail, it uses a single configuration file.
Post Fix
The program provides file and print services for various Microsoft Windows clients and can integrate with a Windows Server domain, either as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) or as a domain member. It can also be part of an Active Directory domain.
Samba
The most common email program on the Internet. Several distributions such as Fedora, Red Hat, and Slackware use it as the default mail server program.

The configuration file used by the log daemon.
syslog:
Displays the last 10 lines of a text file.
tail:
Traces the route taken by packets between two computers, enabling you to isolate problems to specific areas of the trip
tracerroute:
Displays the time the system has been running, as well as three load averages (for the past minute, the past 5 minutes, and the past 15 minutes)
uptime:
A utility to search a database for a domain name, IP address, or NIC name and usually contains adminsistative and technical contacts so that you can find a person to handle problems at that domain.
