What were the crusades?

Series of military expeditions in which Europeans tried to gain control of the holy land of Jerusalem from Muslims.

What did the pope tell


Christians?

That those who died in the holy war would be immediately absolved of their sins. People were convinced that fighting this war was the will of God.

What did the pope hope would happen?

Crusades would stop Christians from fighting among themselves

Who posed a particular threat to the Christians and why?

Seljuk Turks- they had risen to power in Jerusalem and attacked European Christians making pilgrimages into the city

What was the first crusade and what happened?

People’s crusade- 12k french peasants along with two armies from Germany marched through Europe to Constantinople

What happened to people marching?

1/3 died bc they were untrained and in rags and with no money

What crusade came next?

Nobles crusades- great lords led armies of mostly french warriors fought for religion and adventure/gain wealth or a fancy title

What happened at end of the nobles crusade?

The french warriors reaches and took over Jerusalem

Later crusades- second and third crusades were they successful?

Second not good and third - settlement was reached with Saladin- Muslim in control of Jerusalem which allowed Christian pilgrims access to Jerusalem once more

What was the result of the 4th crusade?

Created the division between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church

Positive- brought new trade and advances in math technology and medicine from Arabs. Europeans learned to make better maps and ships


Negative- deaths of many people, created religious intolerance, and created a permanent split between eastern and western Christianity
