-Growth Hormone
What does overproduction of growth hormone cause?
-leads to unwanted growth of bones and other soft tissue
-causes elevation of BG leading to glucose intolerance -In children: results in giantism -In adults: results in acromegaly (overgrowth of bones and soft tissues); however, bones are unable to grow long so they grow in width and thickness |
What causes overproduction of growth hormones?
-almost always caused by benign pituitary tumor (adenoma)
Describe s&s of an overproduction of growth hormones:
-begin gradually (20-30s)
-enlargement of hands and feet -club-like fingers -range from mild joint pain to deforming, crippling arthritis -thickening and enlargement of bony and soft tissues on the face and head -jaw juts forward -paranasal and frontal sinuses enlarge -forehead enlarges -coarsening of facial features -tongue enlarges -voice deepens -sleep apnea -skin becomes thick, leathery, and oily -peripheral neuropathy -proximal muscle weakness -colon polyps and poss cancer -visual disturbances and headaches -predisposes to atherosclerosis -hyperglycemia (polydipsia and polyuria) -cardiomegaly, left ventricular hypertrophy, angina pectoris, and HTN |
Most frequently-occurring pituitary tumor:
-Prolactinomas
A rare disorder that involves a decrease in one or more of the pituitary hormones:
-hypopituitarism
