Adaptation
A special characteristic that helps an organism survive
Behavioral Adaptation
Behavior that allows animals to respond to life needs
Ex: hibernation, migration, instinct, learned behavior
Physical Adaptation
An alteration (change) in the animal's structure that helps it survive in that environment
Ex: camouflage, mimicry
Camouflage
An adaptation that allows an organism to blend in with its environment
Mimicry
To look like or imitate another animal
Hibernate
To rest or sleep through the winter
Migrate
To move to another place where it is warmer
Instinct
A way of acting that an animal is born with. It does not need to be learned.
Learned Trait (Learned Behavior)
Behavior that is taught or learned by doing
Inherited Trait
A characteristic that comes from your parents
Vertebrate
An animal with a backbone
Invertebrate
An animal without a backbone.
Amphibian
A cold-blooded animal that spends part of its life in water and part on land
Ex: frog
Reptile
An animal that lives on land and has a waterproof skin
Ex: lizards, turtles, snakes
Bird
An animal that has a beak, feathers, two wings, and two legs
