Osmosis

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high concentration to an area of low concentration. When a substance is too big to diffuse across a membrane, water will move instead.

Plasmolysis

The movement of water out of a cell causing the cell to shrivel. Plasmolysis in a plant cell. Cell membrane and cytoplasm shrivel within the cell wall. As water moves into the cell, the cell wall prevents cell from bursting. Pressure is exerted by cell wall- turgor pressure.
