Diffusion

Because of molecular motion, molecules of a substance tend to spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Diffusion does not require energy, it works because of the random motion of molecules. Diffusion occurs relatively slowly.

Cell Membrane

Composed of phospholipid. Seperates the cell from its surrounding environment. Controls movement of materials in and out of the cell. Maintains homeostasis and recognizes chemical signals.

Selectively Permeable

Barrier which allows only certain molecules to pass and not others. The cell membrane uses size as one way to determine which molecules can pass through.
