Berg Connector :
The official name for the smaller peripheral power-supply connectors that most often attach to a floppy disk drive.
CHKDSK :
Windows utility that checks a hard disk for errors.
Contrast :
The ratio between the light intensity of true black and true white.
D-connectors :
D-shaped connectors used for a variety of connections in the PC and networking world.
Degauss :
To remove magnetism from a device.
Device Manager :
A utility that allows technicians to examine and configure all the hardware and drivers installed on a machine.
Dr. Watson :
An application error debugger. This diagnostic tool detects application failures and logs diagnostic details.
Extended Partition :
A partition on a basic disk that is created from unpartitioned free disk space, and is not formatted with a file system.
FDISK :
A DOS utility used to partition a hard disk.
Firewire :
An IEEE 1394 standard to send wide-band signals over a thin connector system that plugs into TV's, VCR's, TV cameras, PC's, etc.
Format :
Both a DOS command and the act of preparring a volume to receive files and folders by defining the file structure.
Heat Sink :
A passive device made out of a heat-conducting metal that is installed on top of a CPU.
I/O Address :
Specific area of memory that a component uses to communicate with the system.
Interrupt Request (IRQ) :
A signal from a hardware device, such as a modem or a mouse, indicating that it needs the CPU's attention.
Loopback Plug :
Also called a wrap plug, this takes the signal going out of a plug and essentially echoes it back.
Mini-DIN connector :
The 6-pin round circular connectors that are keyed to plug in only one way. Designed for keyboards and mice.
Molex Connector :
The large peripheral connector used on such devices as hard drives and CD/DVD drives.
Parttion :
A section of the storage area of a hard disk.
Parallel ATA :
The name retroactively given to the ATA/IDE standards which uses a normal 40-ping connector.
Pimary Partition :
A type of partition on a basic disk that can be marked active. There can be up to four on any single physical disk.
Serial ATA :
A serial link -- a single cable with a minimum of four wires creates a point-to-point connection between devices.
System Memory :
The primary computer memory that holds instructions and data for currently executing software.
Task Manager :
This utility shows all running programs, including hidden ones.Useful for terminating programs that are non-responsive or that will not shut down normally.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) :
A 12 Mbps serial interconnect for keyboards, printers, joysticks, and many other devices. Enables hot-swapping and daisy chaining of up to 127 devices.
WinMSD :
Run-line command that will launch the System Information utility. It provides comprehensive information about the system's resource usage, hardware, and software enviroment.
