Total Internal Relection

The phenomenon in which light, travelling in a medium of relatively high refractive index, is reflected as it strikes an interface between that medium and a second medium with a relatively low refractive index with an angle of incidence greater than the critcal angle.

Snell's law or Law of refraction

A law stating that when a wave travels from one medium in which the speed is V1 to another in which the speed is V2 (such that v1 is not equal to v2), the angle of incidence i and angle of refraction r are related by :

Sin i/Sin r =V1/V2=n2/n1

Where n1 and n2 are refractive indices of the two media.

Critical angle

The limiting angle of incidence beyond which total internal reflection occurs. It is given by Sin icrit = n2/n1 for a ray travelling from a medium of refractive index n1 into a medium of refractive index n2.
