Why do multicellular organisms need a transport system?
Because multicellular organisms are relatively big and have a low surface area to volume ratio. They're also very active which means lots of cells are respiring very quickly so they need a fast supply of glucose and oxygen.
Single circulatory system
Blood passes through the heart once for each complete cycle of the body.
Fish have a ..1.. circulatory system. The heart pumps blood to the gills and then on through the rest of the body.
1=Single
Double circulatory system
The blood passes through the heart twice for each complete circuit of the body.
Mammals have a ..1.. Its like two linked loops. One sends blood to the lungs - this is called the ..2.., and the other sends blood to the rest of the body - this is called the ..3..
1=Double circulatory system
2=Pulmonary system 3=Systemic |
Closed circulatory system
Blood is enclosed inside blood vessels.
Fish have a ..1.. The heart pumps blood into arteries, these branch out into capillaries. Substances diffuse from the blood in the capillaries into body cells but the blood stays inside the blood vessels.
1=closed circulatory system
Open circulatory system
Blood isn't enclosed in blood vessels all the time, instead it flows freely through the body cavity.
Insects have a ..1.. The segmented heart pumps blood forwards. Blood is pumped into single main artery. The main artery opens up into body cavity. Blood flows back through body cavity and blood returns to the heart through valves.
1=Open circulatory system
