How many reasons were there for Henry V wanting to invade France in 1415?
6, 3 because he wanted to, and 3 because he was able to
What were the 6 reasons?
1) Wanted to strengthen his claim to the English throne
2) Wanted to claim his "just rights and inheritance" in France
3) Wanted to create a cross channel empire

4) Because the French were weak
5) Because the Scots/Welsh were weak
6) Because he had increasingly solved his problems in England and could so focus his energies elsewhere
1)
Why did Henry feel that he had to try strengthen his claim to the English throne?
-His father usurped the throne (stole it), so he felt he needed to legitimise his dynasty by doing solving the problems at home and doing something like invading France
1)
What problems did Henry face upon his accession in 1413? (4)
He had been left with large debs, a divided nobility, the rising threat of heresy, and to prove he was different to his father... Was in a very vulnerable position at the start of his reign
1)
Why was Henry so keen to portray himself as the perfect monarch upon accession?
Because he feared that his father may overlook him and choose his younger brother, Thomas, and so he wanted to distance himself from those doubts straight away
1)
How was his coronation used to portray himself as the 'perfect monarch'? (3)
-He was apparently anointed with sacred oil
-Which was luckily rediscovered just days before his coronation...
-The monarch anointed with this oil was destined to reclaim Normandy and Aquitane and be the best king ever!!! ...
1)
Did Henry have the support of the country etc? (2)
-The will of the country largely seemed to be with Henry
-Parliament liked him much more than they did his dad
2)
How was Henry V linked to the French throne? (2)
-Henry's great grandfather Edward III's mother was the sister of the French King Charles IV
-Edward III had attempted to pursue those claim in 1337 and succeeded in the 100 years war
2)
Why did Henry want to emulate Edward III? (3)
-England had since lost the land won then (Aquitaine, Poitou, Guines, Calais) due to succeeding kings
-Henry V wanted to emulate Edward III and regain these lands
-Was this all just an excuse for invasion?
3)
What were some trading ports Henry V wanted to take over, and why? (3)
-Calais, Normandy and Picardy were all important trading ports
-These places would allow him to control the Channel
-Could have safe access to the River Seine (via sea) and River Somme... They were two very important trade routes into Central Europe
-They would create a barrier between the 'auld alliance' of France and Scotland
3)
Why did Henry want to take over Western Flanders and Aquitane? (2)
-Flanders was a large manufacturer of wool
-Aquitaine had a very valuable wine trade
3)
What was Henry's long term ambitions?
To create an empire, and creating a cross channel empire was seen as the start of it
4)
What was wrong with Charles IV, and which the leaders of which houses fought over the vacuum of power left behind? (2)

-John, Duke of Burgundy, and Louis, Duke of Orleans, were competing to fill the void of power left by Charles' inability to rule
4)
What did John the Fearless do in 1407 that sparked civil war? (2)
-He successfully plotted the murder of Louis, Duke of Orleans
-Both houses were seeking allies, in particular the King of England
4)
Why would the Burgundians, and so John the Fearless, be a crucial ally for Henry V? (4)
-Because he was the most powerful of all the relevant Princes in France,
-He was the effective ruler of Flanders
-He might help to resolve trading disputes between Flemish and English interest
-They could also offer protection for the eastern flank of Henry's desired French empire
4)
Why would the Armagnacs be a useful ally for Henry? (2)
-Armagnacs tended to have more influence over the king
-Could offer Henry the kings daughter Catherine in marriage
4)
How did Henry handle the offers from both sides of becoming allies?
-Henry used his impressive diplomatic skills to play the two sides off against each other, and so not coming to a firm deal with either side
-This meant he was not committing himself to fully supporting either side in the French Civil War, and ensuring that the two sides continued to be divided enough to have to ally with him rather than with each other
4)
In 1415, which side was Henry more on the side of?
By 1415, Henry had not made an official alliance, but John the fearless seems to have agreed not to do anything to hinder Henry if he were to invade
4)
Why is this a golden opportunity for Henry? (4)
-There was so much going wrong in France
-It was too good to turn down
-Would he have invaded France had they not been so weak?
-He would be attacking a nation where powerful groups were willing to do underhand deals for self gain
5)
Why were the Scots weak, and what did this mean for England? (2)
-In 1414 Henry established a truce with Scotland which he knew would hold as Henry held the son of the governor of Scotland in captivity (after the cross border raids in 1413)
-This meant England would no longer have to fight a war on two fronts, as they used to have to do during the years of the auld alliance between France and Scotland
5)
Why were the Welsh weak/impassive, and what did this mean for England?
-Despite his father having faced revolt in Wales, Henry V as King quickly managed to win friends in Wales, and offered to draw a line under the past
-This meant he would not face any opposition from Wales, and he could even rely on Welshman to fight for him
6)
What problems had Henry V solved in England? (4)
-He implemented nationwide laws to combat the law, order and injustice problems, which were remaining from his father's reign
-He brought corrupt English officials to justice and punished men who had been guilty of traditional nicely crimes, regardless of status
-All this gave Henry V more support from the public and parliament
-Did what other kings had struggled to do
