Coefficient

the number in front of a variable, which tells how many of that variable there is


example: 3a = a + a + a


3 is the coefficient

Integers

the set {...,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...} This number set does not include fractions or decimals.

Real Numbers

the set of numbers that includes rational and irrationals.

Distributive Property

helps to simplify expressions by eliminating parenthesis.


The number or variable on the outside gets multiplied by everything on the inside.


example: 4(3+a) = 4(3) + 4(a) = 12 + 4a

Irrational Numbers

Numbers that cannot be expressed as terminating or repeating decimals.


Example: 3.14159...

Simplest Form

An expression that has no parenthesis or like terms.


Example: 3x + 5y + 10

Evaluate

To find the value of an expression.


Example: Evaluate the following expression when a = 4 in 5a.


5(4) = 20

Natural Numbers

The set {1, 2, 3, 4...}
