How does the bacterium tetanus cause disease? What happens as a result? |
Tetanus produces a toxin that blocks the function of certain nerve cells, causing muscle spasms. |
One of the two main ways that a pathogen causes disease once it has successfully entered our bodies. |
|
What are the three main interfaces (or surfaces of contact) of organisms with the environment? How do pathogens penetrate these interfaces? What natural defences prevent invasion of each interface? |

Define host cell |
The cell that a pathogen has invaded and inside of which is reproducing. |

In which two ways can pathogens cause damage once they have successfully entered our bodies? |
1. Production of toxins 2. Cell damage (physical damage) - Rupturing them to release nutrients (proteins etc.) inside them. - Breaking down nutrients inside the cell for their own use. This eventually starves and kills the cell. - Replicating inside the cells and bursting them when they're released, e.g. Some viruses do this. |
The second way is subdivided into 3 more! |
