Speak your mind, a mental heath hotline.

1) Why did we choose the topic of mental health?

- something that many people can relate to

- in fact, mental illnesses affect all Canadians indirectly at some point in their life through a friend, family member or colleague

- 20% of Canadians will experience a mental health illness themselves

- they are often the cause of other teen social issues in the PSA's that many of you created ex. people who don't know how to positively cope with their problems will often turn to things like drugs and alchol

2) Connection 2 to Uglies

- throughout the dystopian novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, there is a theme of mental health

- the characters receive the pretty surgery (mandatory 16) unknowingly get lesions injected into their brains

- lesions go through personality changes

- personality changes are similar to bipolar disorder

- after the character shay received the surgery, she was described as bubbly and happy, which is not who she is

2) Connection 2 to Uglies

- although the book is an extreme, Shay and teens with bipolar disorders all have the same feelings

- they are experiencing many negative and positive emotions and do not know how to deal with them

-due to lack of education about mental health, and not wanting to speak up or being scared to speak up

- ties into why we created our organization because we educate teens in schools, encourage them to speak up, listen to what they have to say
