Baseline

The imaginary line all letters sit on

X-Height

The distance from the baseline to the mean line.

Mean Line

The imaginary line that runs along the top of most lowercase letter.

Descender

The part of lower case letters that extend below the baseline.

Ascender

The part of lowercase letters that extend above the mean line.

Cap Line

The imaginary line that runs along the top of uppercase letters.

Cap Height

The distance from the capline to the baseline; this does NOT determine the type size.

Measuring Type

The measurement from the bottom of the lowest descender to the top of the highest ascender.

Points

The unit of measure; 72 of these make an inch.

Stems

The significant, full-length or diagonal stroke of a letterform.

Serif

The finishing stroke or decoration that project from the main stroke.

Sans Serif

Letterforms without serifs

Ligature

Two or more characters joined as a single letterform.

Spine

The curved stem of the letter S.

Crossbar

The horizontal stroke across the middle of upper case letters, like A, B, and H.

Counter

The space entirely or partially enclosed within a letterform.

A small section of a curved letter that extends above or below the baseline and mean line.
