Combination Reaction

When two reactants combine to give one product.

A + B ---> AB

Decomposition

When some substances are heated, they can be broken down or decomposed.

AB ---> A + B

Displacement/Substitution

A metal or non-metal may displace another from its salt.

A + BX ---> AX + B

Double decomposition

- This means that two things are being broken up.

- When salt solutions are being mixed together, they exchange ions.

- The reaction starts off with two solutions and in exchange you always end up with a solid and a solution.

AB(aq) + CD(aq) ---> AD(s) + CB(aq)

Neutralisation

- Involves the reaction between the acid and the base.

- A base is a metallic oxide or hydroxide.

- Acids and bases react until their pH is exactly 7 or neutral.

- Hence, water is always produced.

Reversable

Reactions proceeds from reactants to products or from products or from products to reactants.

A + B ↔ AB

Redox

Involves (i) reduction (gain of electrons)

(ii) oxidation (loss of electrons)
