Holotype

Specimen designated at time of publication upon which a name is based.

Isotype

Duplicate of holotype, collected same time and same place by the same person from the same population.

Paratype

Cited in a publication but isn't a holotype, isotype, or syntype

Neotype

Specimen from non-original collection designated to serve as the type when holotype was lost, destroyed, or never designated.


Syntype

Any specimens cited in a species description when no holotype was designated or one of two or more specimens that were all designated as types

Lectotype

Selected from the original material to serve as type when no holotype was designated at the time of publication or when holotype is missing or if original type consisted of more than one specimen or taxon.

Paralectotype

Additional specimen from among syntypes after electrotype is designated

Isolectotype

Duplicate of a lectotype

Epitype

A specimen selected to serve as an interpretive type when holotype, electrotype, or neotype is ambiguous

Allotype

Speimen of the opposite sex to the holotype. Designated from among the paratypes.
