KATHLEEN

Hi Tyler.

The sight of Kathleen immediately draws pain to Tyler. He studies her...

TYLER (a beat)

I think this was a mistake. I can’t do this.

Kathleen moves a few steps in.

KATHLEEN

No don’t say that. This needs to happen, we need to talk.

Tyler is trying to hold on to his seeping emotions.

TYLER

I thought I wanted to talk, but seeing you walk through that door brought it all back.

KATHLEEN

Tyler...

TYLER

How could you do that me? Why would you do that to me?

KATHLEEN

I know I did wrong, but it was because I couldn’t bear to hurt you.

Tyler is confused.

TYLER

You didn’t want to hurt me? All you did was hurt me! At one point I didn’t even know if you were dead or alive! You just packed up your apartment and left town without so much as a note.

KATHLEEN

I did send you a letter.

Tyler waives off Kathleen’s comment.

TYLER

I know that I eventually received a letter from you with a lousy explanation. But I am talking about when you first decided to just jump up and leave.

KATHLEEN

I know, but I can explain.

TYLER

Can you? What explanation can a mother give to their child for abandoning them especially in the manner in which you did?

KATHLEEN

Mother’s do crazy things when it comes to the welfare of their children. Sometimes the actions come across wrong, but a lot of times there are good reasons behind those situations.

Tyler is getting angry.

TYLER

Then you know what mom, enlighten me. Tell me why you walked out on me. I wanna hear this eye opening excuse.

KATHLEEN (careful)

I don’t need you to be angry right now. I need you to calm down so I can talk to you.

TYLER

As long as you are standing before me, this is how it’s going to be. So either you state your information or you turn around and walk the hell out of that door. Something that should come easy for you.

Kathleen’s emotions start to drop. Tears start to slowly appear. (not a flow of tears just that emotion right at the edge)

KATHLEEN

Why are you talking to me like that? You’re hurting me.

TYLER

Yeah? I know the feeling all too well.

Kathleen turns away from Tyler so she can compose herself. Tyler’s anger is not allowing him to feel emotion for her. After a few seconds, Kathleen attempts to approach the conversation calmly.

KATHLEEN

I need you to have a seat.

The line was odd and it sends mixed signals to Tyler. He tries to mask his concern for the subject but you can see his anger is slowly giving away to a little bit of fear.

TYLER

Why would I need to sit down?

KATHLEEN (matter of fact)

The reasons I left are complicated and very painful. What I am about to tell you is going to change your life...completely.

A little concern peeps through Tyler’s softening anger. But just a little...

TYLER

Are you saying that you are ill? Is this about you being sick?

KATHLEEN

No I’m fine. This isn’t about me at all. The reasons why I left are all about you. And I need you to sit down.
