Yesterday I was invited to Kamala and Prakash Kumar's dinner.

कल मुझे कमला और प्रकाश कुमार के डिनर में बुलाया गया ।

It was a very fine dinner.
|
बहुत ही शानदार दिनर था ।
|
|
|
I've never eaten as much as we were given to eat.
|
हमें जितना खाना खिलाया गया, उतना मैंने कभी नहीं खाया है !

When Kamala started giving me more for a third time…
|
जब कमला जी मुझे तीसरी बार और खाना देने लगीं …

|
|
…I began saying 'Enough, Enough' but she took no notice.
|
… तो "बस! बस!" कहने लगा, पर उन्होंने ध्यान नहीं दिया ।

|
Meat, vegetables, daal, roti, rice, chutney…
|
गोश्त, सब्ज़ी, दाल, रोटी, चावल, चटनी…
|

|
..so much food had been prepared that I just can't tell you.
|
… इतना ज़्यादा खाना तैयार किया गया था कि मैं बता नहीं सकता !

It wasn't the kind of Indian food you get in London.
|
जैसा हिन्दुस्तानी खाना लन्दन में मिलता है, वैसा नहीं था ।

Here everything was completely fresh…

यहाँ तो हर चीज़ एकदम ताज़ी थी …

…and it was as tasty as it was fresh!

… और जितनी ताज़ी थी, उतनी ही स्वादिष्ट !

The sweet dish had been brought from the shop..

मिठाई तो किसी दुकान से लाई गई थी …

..but apart from the sweet everything had been made at home.

…पर मिठाई को छोड़कर हर चीज़ घर में ही बनाई गी थी ।

Kamala ji is an expert at cooking.
|
खाना बनाने में तो कमला जी माहिर हैं ।
|
|
|
But you must be wondering, who came to the dinner altogether?
|
लेकिन तुम अपने मन में पूछ रही होगी, डिनर में कौन आया था ?

|
|
I'll tell you. I arrived late because of my studying.
|
मैं बताता हूँ । अपनी पढ़ाई की वजह से मैं तो देर से पहुँचा ।
|
|
|
When I arrived I was sat in a corner of the room.
|
मेरे पहुँचने पर मुझे कमरे के एक कोने में बिठाया गया ।
|
|
|
Khanna ji had been sat in the middle, and next to him his wife…
|
खन्ना जी को सबों के बीच में बिठाया गया, और उनकी बगंल में उनकी पत्ली ….
|
|
|
…whom I thought very nice.
|
… जो मुझे बहुत अच्ची लगीं ।
|
|
|
Their son had been invited too, but for some reason he didn't come.
|
उनके लड़के को भी बुलाया गया था, पर किसी वजह से वह नहीं आया ।
|
|
|
Sangeeta had gone to see a film with her friend Pinkie (Khanna ji's younger sister).
|
संगीता अपनी सहेली पिंकी (खन्ना जी की छोटी बहिन) के साथ फ़िलम देखने गई थी ।
|
|
|
They got home when the film ended at about eleven and they ate whatever food was left.
|
वे लोग फ़िलम के ख़त्म होने पर क़रीब ग्यारह बजे पर आ गई और जितना खाना वचा था, खा लिया ।
|
|
|
The film was 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun' which was made several years ago.
|
फ़िलम थी "हम आपके हैं कौन," जी कई साल पहले बनाई गई थी ।
|
|
|
Sangeeta must have already seen it at least four or five times.
|
संगीता इसे कम से कम चार-पाँच बार देख चुकी होगी ।
|
|
|
And I don't understand why she wanted to see it again.
|
उसे फिर से क्यों देखना वाहती थी, मेरी समझ में नहीं आता ।
|
|
|
Suresh also came; Kamala ji sat him near her.
|
सुरेश भी आए थे । कमला जी ने उन्हें अपने पास बिठा लिया ।
|
|
|
Arun had gone to see some friend so he was 'anupasthit' - absent.
|
अरुण तो किसी दोस्त से मिलने गए थे इसलिए वे तो "अनुपस्थित" थे ।
|
|
|
He's very fond of such words.
|
उनहें इस प्रकार के शब्द बहुत पसंद हैं ।
|
|
|
He loads his speech with so many Sanskrit words that half of what he says goes right over my head.
|
अपनी बोलो में वे इतने संस्कृत के शब्द लाद देते हैं कि मुझसे तो उनकी आधी बातें समझी नहीं जातीं ।
|
|
|
Several interesing things about Hindi were said during the dinner.
|
दिनर के दौरान हिन्दी के बारे में बहुत-सी किलचस्प बातें कही गई ।
|
|
|
Suresh said that Delhi Hindi has become corrupted, because of Panjabi.
|
सुरेश ने कहा कि दिल्ली कि हिन्दी भ्रष्ट हो गई है, पंजाबी ज़बान के कारण ।
|
|
|
Sharma ji too was saying in class that Panjabis mostly say 'maine jana hai'..
|
शर्माजी भी क्लास में कह रहे थे कि पंजाबी लोग ज़्यादातर "मैंने जाता है" कहते हैं …
|
|
|
..which is wrong usage, only 'mujhe jana hai' is correct.
|
… जो कि ग़लत प्रयोग है - "मुझै जाना है" ही सही है ।
|
|
|
But when Suresh said this Parkash ji glared at him in such a way that Suresh fell silent, poor fellow.
|
पर जब सुरेश ने यह बात कही तो प्रकाश झी ने एेसे आंखें दिखाईं कि सुरेश बेचारे चुप हो गए ।
|
|
|
The thing is, you see, that Khanna himself is a Panjabi.
|
बात यह है न, कि खन्ना जी ख़ुद पंजाबी हैं ।
|
|
|
And Prakash completely cowers in front of him - like a 'wet cat'!
|
और उनके सामने प्रकाश एकदम दब जाते हैं - भीगी बिल्ली की तरह ।
|
|
|
In the end Kamala changed the subject…
|
अंत में कमला जी ने विषय बदलकर …
|
|
|
..and made some joke about Rishi and Raj, and everyone started laughing.
|
… ऋषि और राज के बारे में कोई मज़ाक़ किया तो सब लोग हँसने लगे ।
|
|
|
But afterwards Kamal ji must have given Suresh a good scolding!
|
पर बाद में कमला जी ने सुरेश को ख़ूब डाँटा होगा !
|
|
|
Mrs Khanna is a very nice lady.
|
श्रीमती खन्ना बहुत अच्छी महिला हैं ।
|
|
|
She knows a lot about languages too.
|
भाषाओं के बारे में बहुत जानती भी हैं ।
|
|
|
When I asked her why 'Rajasthan' has a 'th' while Pakistan only had 't'..
|
जब मैंने उनसे पूछा कि "राजस्थान" में "थ" क्यों है जब कि "पाकिस्तान" में 'त' ही है …
|
|
|
She explained it to me by syaing that 'sthan' is Sanskrit' while 'stan' is Persian.
|
… तो उन्होंने यह कहकर बात को समझा दिया कि "स्थान" तो संस्कृत का शब्द है जब कि 'स्तान" फ़ारसी का है ।
|
|
|
Both words have the same meeting - 'place.'
|
दोनों शब्दों का कही अर्थ है - "जगह" ।
|
|
|
So even words have families!
|
तो सब्दों के भी परिवार होते हैं !
|
|
|
But not like the Kumar family - not at all.
|
पर कुमार पारिवार की तरह नहीं - बिलकुल नहीं !
|
