What is the perfect conditions for a tropical storm to form?

The sea needs to be +27°C and +60m deep.

How does a hurricane form?

1. The sea needs to be +27°C and +60m deep.

2. Rising warm air starts to evaporate which creates low pressure.

3. As the trade winds meet, they spin due to coriolis effect.

4. Air continues to rise then cool as it is rising. This forms the eye of the storm.

5. Air rises faster and fraws in more warm air from the sea surface. At the same time cold air sinks downwards which creates high pressure and calm winds.

6. As the storm moves over the ocean it picks up more warm, moist air, and speed keeps increasing as it moves over the sea.

7. When the storm hits land it looses energy and the wind drops speed because of friction.

How fast does the wind have to be alfor it to be a cat 1 hurricane.

+ 74mph

How wide can a hurricane be?

Can expand up to 300 miles.

What the hurricane scale called?

The Saffir-Simpson scale

What are the different categories in the Saffir-Simpson scale?

Cat 1. 74-95 mph

Cat 2. 96-110 mph

Cat 3. 111-130 mph

Cat 4. 131-145 mph

Cat 5. 155+ mph

What speeds in Cat 1 in the hurricane scale and what damage is there?

74-95 mph

Roof tiles may come off but everything basically remains intact.

What is Cat 2 in the hurricane scale and what damage does it do

96-110 mph

Windows can be hit from debris from the outside and smash. Trees are very bent over in the wind.

What is Cat 3 of the hurricane scale and what damage does it do

111-130 mph

Door of buildings can blow in. Roofs can start to flap and lift off the house. Lots of trees fall down.

What is Cat 4 on the hurricane scale and what damage does it do

131-145 mph

Roofs can come off buildings which leads to walls falling down

Nearly all of the trees have fallen down and most windows are smashed.

What is Cat 5 on the hurricane scale and what damage does it do?

155+ mph

Buildings basically collapse nd no trees anywhere in sight. Very castastophic.

What is the location of tropical storms

Near the equator but not on the equator. Between 5-20° north and south of the equator.

When do the most tropical storms occur.

Late summer, early autumn.
