What is the disease presentation (in a nutshell)?
Incubation about 1 week, then everywhere in the body is very sick and MOF, with easy bleeding (GIT, mucous membrane)/bruising
Is there immunity/vaccine to lassa?
1. natural immunity
2. antibody to glycoprotein and live attenuated vaccine that work in animals, not yet tried in people.
Diagnosis for haemorrhagic fever:
1. serolgy (ELISA, IF)
2. EM
3. culture virus
4. PCR
*use category 4 biosafety
treatment for haemorrhagic fever:
1. Intensive care (fluids, O2, electrolytes, transfuse, iontropes)
2. ribavirin in lassa helps (but not in ebola/marburg)
3. reservoir control etc.
How does ebola/marburg present?
1. really sick
2. haematological signs: bleeding, rash, conjuctival injection
3. DIC, shock, metabolic change
Outcome of ebola/marburg?
1. 25-80% mortality
2. survivors have athralgia and psychosocial change
what lab results from ebola/marburg?
-any treatment for ebola/marburg
1. leucopenia/lymphopenia/ thrombocytopaenia
2. neutrophilia/raised LFTs
-treatment: not much, supportive care, transfusion from survivors
