Ablation
Describes the total destruction of the function of bone marrow, usually results from chemotherapy or radiation for the purpose of destroying cancer cells.
Chelation Therapy
Treatment in which a bond is formed between a metal and molecules which essentially take the metal out of circulation. (This is used to remove minerals that are causing metal poisoning such as lead or iron poisoning.)
Complete Blood Count or CBC with Differential
A laboratory test in which all of the blood cells are counted (The differential is done to differentiate the types of white blood cells, the number of cells compared with normal, and the ratio of one type to another.)
Chemotherapy
Treatment of disease by the use of drugs or chemical agents.
Hematocrit
Volume of blood cells in blood (It also refers to packed cell volume; when used as a laboratory term it is termed hematocrit value.)
Heparinization
Act of administering heparin to prevent a clot from forming in the blood.
Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)
Test used to determine the impact of one of the factors involved in blood clotting.
Phlebotomy
Act of opening a vein to remove blood (the opening is usually made by a needle or a catheter).
Prothrombin Time (PT)
Prothrombin test in which the effect of one of the factors (prothrombin) involved in blood clotting is measured by determining the length of time it takes blood to clot.
Transfusion
Transferring the blood of one person to the blood of another compatible person.
