Treatment options of latent TB

1. Rifampin 600 mg daily for four months


2. INH and B6 for 9 months


3. INH/B6 and rifapentine one a week for 12 weeks

No, it cannot be spread to others

PPD cutoffs for positive test

0-4 mm negative


5-9 mm positive in hiv, recent exposure to tb in last two years, immunocompromised, prednisone use, anti tnf alpha, esrd


>10 mm any other risk factors like dm, health care worker, etc


>15 mm for no risk factors

Active TB treatment

INH/B6 and rifampin for six months


Pyrazinamide and ethambutol for two months

Indications for prolonged treatment for active TB

9 months in Cavitary disease, Positive smear or culture at 2 months, HIV positivity


12 months for meningeal, miliary, joint or bone

TB treatment tests at baseline and followup

Mycobacterium cultures with 3 sputum specimens at baseline and monthly until two consecutive samples are negative


Test for HIV


AST, ALT, bilirubin, creatinine and platelet count at baseline


Monthly testing for visual acuity and red green colour discrimination when on ethambutol


Monthly followup to ensure taking medications and no adverse effects of meds
