What are passive and active transport?

Passive: the movement of materials across the cell membrane without using energy (ex. diffusion).

Active: the movement of materials across the cell membrane against the concentration gradient using energy.

How will water or solutes travel in a hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic solution?

In a hypertonic solution, water will move from a substance to the solution. In a hypotonic solution, water will move from the solution into a substance. In an isotonic solution, water will not move.

What are endocytosis and exocytosis?

Endocytosis: taking materials into the cell by means of pockets of the cell membrane.

Exocytosis: the membrane of the vacuole surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane, releasing the contents.

Why is the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment necessary for survival?

The maintenance of a stable internal environment is important so that the reactions that allow an organism to survive are at an optimal level.

What is cell specialization?

Certain cells specialize in certain functions. The shape of a cell is related to its function.

What are the levels of organization in eukaryotes?
