Spur Gear

A gear with straight cut teeth that lie parralel to the centerline/axis of the gear

Helical Gear

A gear with teeth at an angle to the axis of the gear

External Gear

A gear with teeth along it's circumference

Internal Ring Gear

A gear which has teeth running along the inside circumference of the gear

Pinion Gear

An external gear designed to rotate on the inside of an internal gear

Bevel Gear

A gear with teeth cut at an angle to the outside gear surface

Hypoid Gear Set

A bevel gear which has teeth that are at an angle to the gear axis

Gear Ratio

The speed that two gears move in relation to each other. It is expressed as the number of rotations the drive gear must make in order to rotate the driven gear.

Direct Drive

When corresponding gears are of same size and same number of teeth, the gears have a gear ratio of 1:1, when the transmission is in direct drive, the transmission and engine turn at the same speed

Gear Reduction (Underdrive)

When the drive value of a gear ratio is greater than the driven value

Overdrive

A gear ratio in which the drive value is less than the driven value, causing the driven gear to rotate faster than the drive gear.

Idler Gear (Floating Gear)

A gear that operates between the drive and driven gear, thus affecting the direction of rotation for those gears
