Training Leashes
Leashes come in a variety of sizes: 2,4,&6 foot
Leather Leash
Soft, easier to handle and last longer.

Not good for long leash because if wet it can become slippery
Slip Leash
Flat nylon slips are used in kennels to move dogs around

Used in Agility because easy to put on and take off

Excellent tool unfamiliar dogs
Tab Leash
-Chain tabs are not recommended but only for chewers
-Tabs are used in transfer from on leash to off leash training
-Used for agility
-Used to reinforce commands given at home by clients
Long Leash
- Nylon is preferred
- 33 foot is used for Schutzhung Tracking
- Required for beginning stages of remote collar training
Long Leash
- It's not a good training tool
- Provides to much freedom
- Dogs can learn to run away when the pressure is not there anymore
Collars - Flat collars
- Must fit comfortable on dog (two fingers have fit well)
- Needs to have aring for dog's tag
- Used for police or protection training (Wide Leather Collar)
Martingale - greyhound collar
- Dog's are not able to slip out
- Adjustable & fit snuggly on dogs' head
- If the 2 rings from the collar come together, then the collar is too loose
Slip Collar - Correction Collar
- The circle is where the correction comes into play
- Known as choke collar
- Proper fit is about 2 inches of collar left over around dog's neck
- Facing the dog make a P (for puppy)
- Always loose except when given a correction
- If they pull hard enough, they can avoid getting a correction
- Not good for clients because it takes perfect timing
Pinch Collar - German Collar
- Looks like a medieval torture tool
- Place collar on arm and pull
- Pinch per square inch
- A correction with a pinch collar should be less forceful than when using a slip collar
Starmark Collar
- The circle is where the correction comes into play
- Known as choke collar

Head Halti
- Used as a management tool
- Dogs will paw to take it off
- Some brachycephalic (boston terriers, pugs)
- Do not yank or else it could damage dog neck and eyes
- When taken off it could revert back to old behavior
- Can be used to close dog's mouth
- Good for dogs that mouth a little
Gentle Leader
- Doesn't close the dog's mouth
- Good training tool to teach how to go from Gentle leader to flat
Muzzles
- Used to prevent dogs from biting
- Materials: Nylon, Plastic, leather, & metal
- Leather muzzles (Basket muzzle) used for police dogs
- Metal muzzles: good for dogs to have plenty of air, and easily drink but a tooth can slip through
- Can be dangerous on a dog in the heat, a closed mouth will not cool down
Harness
- Fit over dog's body
- Used for dogs that you don't want to restrict pulling
- Used for SAR tracking, weight pulling & protecting training
- Used for dogs with overly sensitive necks (toy breeds) or neck and back problems
No pull harness - Easy walk
- Leash hooks up in the front of the chest and not the back
- Great for dog to dog introduction
- Great for smaller dogs with trachea problems
Platform beds
- Ideal location to teach a dog their place
- Clear boundary to show the dog whether he's on or off
Dog Beds
- Needs to be comfortable, easy to clean, show a very "clear boundary and have defined edges."
Crates
- 2 types of crates: Plastic and Metal
- Wonderful for house training
- Good for traveling with the dog in a car or in a plane
- Crates should NOT be used for punishment
Training treats
- Hot dogs, BJ, NB, string cheese, liver or chicken
- Don't use treats that take to long to eat
- You can use kibble
- Higher value treats are great for dogs that need more motivation in certain situation
Training Pouch
- Used for placing treats in it or you can use your pocket
- Useful during the beginning of clicker training
- Problem with a pouch is the dog starts to sit in the direction of the pouch
- Dog will look for pouch to see if he should respond or not
Dog Beds
- Wonderful way to relieve stress
- Toys can be used for exercise
- Can be used as a reward
- Find their favorite toy and used it for training
- Switch the toy every 3 days to make it new
Interactive Toys
- Kong is very durable (you can put treats and their food inside
- Gives dogs something appropriate to chew on and is a safe outlet for foraging behaviors
- Works great for dogs with little separation anxiety and dogs that chew too much
