2 Thessalonians 2:14

Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.

What is Tradition broadly?

“God has spoken to man. He has revealed Himself in and through Christ. He has given man certain commandments to observe, doctrines to believe, institutions to make use of, and so save his soul.”

Every Catholic who knows his Religion declares with St. Augustine:

“I would not believe the Gospel were it not that I am moved to do so by the authority of the Catholic Church.”

objective Tradition

Whatever is delivered or transmitted

Active Tradition

Ways and the means by which an object is propagated and transmitted

Tradition as defined by the Council of Trent

All revealed doctrine and discipline is also contained in the unwritten Traditions, which, having been received by the Apostles from the the mouth of Christ Himself, or through the dictation of the Holy Host by the same Apostles, reached us as if they were handed to us “the same Traditions, which belong to the Faith and discipline, kept by a continued succession in the Church, we accept and venerate with. Like-wise affection and reverence.” Session IV
