-tracking powder, bait or paste used for the control of rodents
-restricted use pesticide -kills almost instantly (rats) -smells like dead fish |
What is the toxicity of zinc phosphide?
-acute tox is due to phosphine gas
-lethal dose is about 20-40mg/kg |
What can exacerbate poisoning by zinc phosphides?
gastric acid - hydrolysis of zinc phosphate to phosphine gas
What is the mechanism of action for zinc phosphide?
-mechanism unknown
-may inhibit oxidative phosphorylation and cellular energy production resulting in cell death -tissue affected are heart, brain, liver, lung and kidney |
What are the clinical signs of Zinc Phosphide?
-rapid onset
-anorexia -vomiting, increased rate and depth of respiration -abdominal pain, bloat - death due to anoxia -CNS signs in dogs "running dog" |
What are the lesions associated with zinc phosphide toxicosis?
odor of acetylene in stomach or vomitus
-gastritis - hemorrhagic -congestion in liver and kidney -pulmonary edema -liver and kidney damage |
How do you laboratory diagnose zinc phosphide toxicosis?
-presence in stomach contents or vomitus
-specimens should be frozen rapidly -Elevated serum zinc -metabolic acidosis, dehydration, hypocalcemia |
How do you diagnose zinc phosphide?
-history of exposure
-acetylene odor -clinical signs of rapid onset and rapid death -lab diagnosis |
How do you treat zinc phosphide?
-no specific antidote
-emitcs and gastric lavage -oral antacids -activated charcoal -IV sodium bicarb or sodium lactate -calcium gluconate -oxygen therapy |
What is the prognosis for animals with zinc phosphide toxicosis?
-animals that vomit may recover
-animals showing severe signs of tissue damage have guarded to poor prognosis |
