What are Zinc phosphides?
-tracking powder, bait or paste used for the control of rodents
-restricted use pesticide
-kills almost instantly (rats)
-smells like dead fish

-acute tox is due to phosphine gas
-lethal dose is about 20-40mg/kg
What can exacerbate poisoning by zinc phosphides?
gastric acid - hydrolysis of zinc phosphate to phosphine gas

-mechanism unknown
-may inhibit oxidative phosphorylation and cellular energy production resulting in cell death
-tissue affected are heart, brain, liver, lung and kidney

-rapid onset
-anorexia
-vomiting, increased rate and depth of respiration
-abdominal pain, bloat
- death due to anoxia

-gastritis - hemorrhagic

-presence in stomach contents or vomitus
-specimens should be frozen rapidly
-Elevated serum zinc
-metabolic acidosis, dehydration, hypocalcemia

-history of exposure
-acetylene odor
-clinical signs of rapid onset and rapid death
-lab diagnosis
How do you treat zinc phosphide?
-no specific antidote
-emitcs and gastric lavage
-oral antacids

-animals that vomit may recover
-animals showing severe signs of tissue damage have guarded to poor prognosis
