What is the source of hydrogen sulfide?
liberated from the decomposition of urine and feces in the underfloor wast pits, deep litter, manure packs, sewage and other organic matter containing sulfur
What are the properties of hydrogen sulfide?
colorless and has an odor of rotten eggs
heavier than air
flammable
irritant forming sodium sulfide with moist mucous membranes
What is the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide?
most dangerous sewage gas
humans can detect.005 -.1ppm
20ppm causes irritation
50ppm can cause sever symptoms
1000 ppm cause rapid unconsciouness and death in about an hour
sudden exposure to 400ppm may be quickly fatal
What is the toxicokinetics of hydrogen sulfide?
readily absorbed though the lungs and GI tract
converted to alkali sulfates in the blood
-the hydrosulfide radical is normally oxidized to sulfate and is excreted in urine
-some is excrete in feces
What is the mechanism of action for hydrogen sulfide?
dirrect irritation of mucous membranes
inhibition of cellular repiration by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase
What are the clinical signs of hydrogen sulfide?
large concentration may cause sudden collapse, cyanosis dyspnea, anoxic convulsions, signs of irritation to ocular, respiratory mucosa and lungs as in ammonia
What are the lesions associated with hydrogen sulfate?
-compatible with clinical signs
-the blood is dark and may not clot
-the tissues may be dark or greenish purple
-if congested the GI contents may be black or dark gray and have sewage odor
How do you treat hydrogen sulfide toxicosis?
removal of source
sodium nitrite IV may be partly effective by forming methemoglobin that binds the hydrated sulfide radical and reactive cytochrome oxidase
oxygen and supportive therapy
