What are Carbamate pesticides?
insecticide that is mostly toxic to young animals or animals with deficient liver enzymes
What is the MOA for Carbamates?
-cause reversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase
-Achetylcholinesterase can hydrolyze carbamate but at a slower rate than Ach
When do clinical signs of carbamate pesticide toxicosis occur?
when the rate of carbaylation of achtylcholinesteraces exceeds the hydrolysis of carbamate by the enzyme
What are the clinical signs of carbamate toxicosis?
Same as organophosphates but less severe and shorter duration

-salivation, lacrimation, nasal discharge, increased respiratory sounds, diarrhea bradycardia
-muscle fasciculations, tremors stiff gait
-CNS depression
how do you diagnose carbamate pesticide toxicosis in the lab?
refrigerated blood samples (do not dilute) analyze using rapid method
-pesticide undetectable in tissues blood or secretions because it is rapidly destroyed in the body
How do you diagnose carbamate pesticide toxicosis?
-history
-clinical signs
-lesions (or their absence)
response to atropine therapy
How do you treat carbamate pesticide toxicosis?
atropine sulfate 0.2 mg/kg
2 - PAM not effective
What is the prognosis of carbamate pesticide toxicosis?
generally good if treatment is started soon after clinical signs

animals may survive without treatment if signs are not severe
