Define the tropospher:
It is the first layer ranging from 0-10Km. It is thickest at the equator and thinnest at the poles. It carries 80% of atmospheric mass with 50% of the total atm. mass in the lowest 5.6Km. It is subject to artic haze- becuase pollutants are diluted in a smaller volume of air. Reddish brown haze- long range transport or aerosols from coal buring in asia. The aerosols are 90% sulfur and the rest carbon. The artic haze is destroying the ozone layer found in the stratospher. Temperature: 20 to - 55
Define the Stratosphere:
Extends from 10-50km and houses the ozone layer. Ozone forms in three body recombination prpcesses, where O2 +O* + M collide = O3 + M where M is catalyst that is either neutral atom or heavy metal. Ozone is induced by high UV radiation and gases at high denisty. Temperature- -50 to -10. UV radiation heats the stratopsher and thus does not heat the earth where it binds thymidines to DNA convantly. There is an equilibrium balance between O3 destruction and formation. Nitrous oxide and cholofluorocarbons are man made greenhouse gases that destroy the ozone.
Define Mesophere:
This is the coldest layer as it decreases in temperature as you increase in height all the way to -100. It extends from 50-80km and is the area where meteors ftern burn up.
Define thermosphere
It extends from 85- 640 Km. It reaches temperatures of 1500C however the air pressure is very low so a person would not feel the heat. The main dominent molecules in this layer are n2 and O2. This layer is heated by extreme uv radiation. The space station is found between 320-380 km.
Define Exosphere:
This layer extends from 500-100km; solar winds and particles from the magnetosphere move in and out of this layer. There is no clearly defined temperature in this layer
Define Ionosphere:
Extends from 50-1000km: overlaps with the thermosphere making the inner edge of the magnitosphere. This layer has high energy solar UV and x rays which ionize No,O2, and N2 to form single positive ions and free electrons in a plasma state. These charged particles will not recombine due to low MW. Ions in this region + magnetosphere cause auroas and influence radio propoagation.
Define Magnetosphere:
Protects us from the energetic and magnetic particles in the solar wind ( protons and electrons). When the solar winds hit the magnetosphere they form auroas. Charged particles trapped in the magnetic field ocillate bacl and forth between poles = airpra borealis and australius
