Why do contour lines never cross?
Since contour lines represent elevation, if two lines crossed that would mean two lines have the same elevation at that point and that contradicts that each line is a different elevation.
What does it mean when contour lines are closer together?
When contour lines are close together, it means the mountain is steeper (or harder) to climb.
Why do all USGS topographic maps use the same legend?
So people are not confused by the same symbol meaning something different on another map.
How does a topographic map indicate the direction that a stream flows?
Streams flow downhil, of in the direction that elevation decreases. The V's point toward the higher elevations.
