Murdock (1949)
Functionalists. Found the 4 functions of the family; (1) stable satisfaction on the sex drive, (2) reproduction of the next generation, (3) socialisation of the young, (4) meeting its members' economic needs.
Feminists and Marxists
Criticise Murdocks theory; they say that men benefit more from the family and that the family serves capitalism.
Parsons (1955)
Identified 2 types of societies; the pre-industrial extended family which is multi functional and it is a unit of production, status is ascribed, little geographical and social mobility. The modern industrial nuclear family which only has 2 main functions; primary socialisation of children and stabilisation of adult personalities, the status is achieved and there is social and geographical mobility, the family is a unit of consumption.
Engels (1891)
Found that the monogamous nuclear family developed as a result of inheritance of private property.
Ideological Function
The family today performs this function by representing capitalism as fair.
Zaretsky (1976)
Says that family offers a 'haven' from exploitative capitalist world outside, but it is only an illusion, e.g. Women are exploited by men.
A Unit Of Consumption
The family plays a major role in generating profit in a capitalist economy.
Criticisms
They ignore family diversity and the feminists say that the underestimate gender inequalities.
Liberal Feminism
Gradual change for the better.
Marxist Feminism
Women reproduce labour force and absorb angers, they are also a reserve army of labour.
Radical Feminism
Men are the enemy, and the family is based on patriarchy.
Difference Feminism
Argue that we can't generalise about women, e.g.; white or black, middle class and working class, lesbian and heterosexual women, because they all have different experiences.
