Planes

Imaginary flat surfaces that pass through the body, dividing it into sections and making it possible to "look inside" in order to observe the body's structures.

What are the four anatomical planes?

1. The sagittal plane

2. The median (or mid-sagittal) plane

3. The transverse (horizontal) plane

4. The frontal (coronal) plane

What is a sagittal plane?

A sagittal plane runs vertically through the body, separating it into left and right portions.

What is a median plane?

A median plane (also called a mid-sagittal plane) is a sagittal plane that passes through the midline of the body, dividing it into equal right and left halves.

What is a transverse plane?

A transverse (horizontal) plane runs parallel to the ground, dividing the body into superior and inferior portions.

What is a frontal plane?

A frontal (coronal) plane runs vertically from right to left and divided the body into anterior and posterior parts.
