What are some ways that data can arise? |
From the results of an experiment, from a survey, from a transaction, from automatic measurement of environmental quantities and from the output of a management information system. |
Why is data coded? |
Coded data takes less effort to type in, more data can appear on the screen, takes up less storage and it's easier to check that a code is accurate using validation checks. |
What is encoding data? |
This is the process of putting information/data into a specified format that allows effective transmission or storage by an ICT system. |
What are is an example of encoding? |
ASCII encoding- here the characters on the keyboard are changed into a series of binary digits e.g. 1's and 0's. |
Why do we encode things? |
To compress data- takes up less storage and makes it faster to send to another computer across a network. To enable files produced in one software package to be read by someone who does not have that software package available on their computer. |
What is binary code? |
Code made up from a series of binary digits- 1's and 0's |
Whats a transaction? |
A piece of business, e.g. an order, purchase, return, delivery or transfer of money. |
What are some types of encoding for sound files? |
WAV- used with windows for storing sounds. MIDI- used mainly to communicate between electronic keyboards, synthesisers and computers. MP3- this format is used for compression to reduce the size of the file= popular. Shockwave Audio- used for very high quality sound with very small size. |
What kind of things does processing involve? |
Grouping, making decisions, performing calculations, sorting and organising. |
What is quality of information a measure of? |
The accuracy of the information, how easy the information is to understand, the relevance for a particular use and how up-to-date the information is. |
Why is it important to keep information up-to-date? |
There is a requirement under the Data Protection Act 1998 for anyone who processes personal data to keep that information accurate and up to date. |
There are companies that keep data of people who: |
Have moved houses, have deceased, have asked not to be sent unsolicited mail and those who have never responded to a mail-shot. |
