What is the TMJ ligament?
It is located on the lateral side of each joint and forms a reinforcement of the capsule of the TMJ.
What is the
sphenomandibular ligament?
It is not a portion of the TMJ but is located on
the medial side of the mandible. It runs from the
angular spine of the sphenoid bone to the
lingula of the mandibular foramen. It overlaps
the opening of the foramen.
What is the disc of the joint?
Also called the meniscus of the joint. It is located between the temporal bone and condyle of the mandible on each side. (horseshoe shaped)
What is synovial fluid?
Helps to lubricate the joint and fills the synovial cavities. It is a clear, viscous fluid.

The disc completely divides the TMJ into two
compartments or spaces. They are the upper
synovial cavity and the lower synovial cavity.

encloses the TMJ.
