Simple squamous epithelium |
Simple squamous epithelium Single layer of flattened cells Allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration in sites where protection is not important. Kidney glomeruli, lung air sacs, heart lining, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels. |
Simple cuboidal epithelium |
Simple cuboidal epithelium Single layer of cube like cells with large spherical central nuclei. Secretion & absorption Kidney tubules, ovary surface |
Simple columnar epithelium |
Single layer of tall cells with round to oval nuclei, some bear cillia. Absorption, secretion of mucus, enzymes, ciliated type propels mucus or reproductive cells. Non ciliated lines digestive tract from stomach to rectum, ciliated type lines small bronchi, uterine tubes and some regions of uterus. |
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium |
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium Single layer of cells of differing heights. Secretes mucus, propulsion of mucus by ciliary action. Non ciliated in male sperm carrying ducts, and large ducts. Ciliated type lines the trachea and most of upper respiratory tract. |
Stratified squamous epithelium |
Thick membrane of several cell layers, basal cells are cuboidal or columnar. Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion. Non keratinized type in esophagus, mouth and vagina. Keratinized type forms epidermis of the skin. |
Stratified cuboidal epithelium |
Two layers of cube like cells. Protection. Largest ducts of sweat glands, mammary glands and salivary glands. |
Stratified columnar epithelium |
Several cell layers, basal cells usually cuboidal, superficial cells columnar. Protection and secretion. Small amounts in male utethra and in large ducts of some glands. |
Stratified columnar epithelium |
Several cell layers, basal cells usually cuboidal, superficial cells columnar. Protection and secretion. Small amounts in male utethra and in large ducts of some glands. |
Transitional epithelium |
Resembles stratified squamous and stratified cuboidal, basal cells cuboidal or columnar, surface cells dome shaped. Stretches to allow urinary bladder to fill with urine. Lines ureters, urinary bladder and part of urethra. |
