God created the world in 6 days & rested on the 7th.Day 1 brought heaven earth & light, it must have been so very bright! Day 2 God made the clear blue sky,a place for many birds to fly.Day 3 brought land apart from seas, with all the plants & grass & trees.Day 4 shone forth moon, stars & sun. The work of God was not yet done. Day 5 we see the fish & birds,God did all of this with just His words.Day 6 God formed all beasts & man, to finish His creation plan.Day 7 was especially blessed,a day for worship & for rest.
George Calvert~1st Lord Baltimore

English politician & coloniser who converted to Catholicism. Lead a group of Catholics to live in peace in Newfoundland. The harsh weather lead him to ask to set up an establishment in the area now called Maryland, after the Theotokos, Mary. Died before the paperwork was finalized & his son took over.
Acquisition by the USA of 828,800 square miles of France's claim to the territory of Louisiana in 1803. The U.S. paid $15 million dollars for the Louisiana territory $219 million in 2010 dollars. The land purchased contained all of present-day Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, parts of Minnesota,most of North Dakota, nearly all of South Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, northern Texas, portions of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, & Louisiana. This doubled the size of the US. Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson.
2,000-mile east-west wagon route that connected Missouri River to valleys in Oregon & locations in between. Lasted from1840s until the railroad at the end of 1860s. On foot took 4-6months. Oldest of the northern commercial & emigrant trails. Discovered by fur trappers/traders1811-1840. At 1st Oregon Trail was not passable to wagons. 1846 Oregon Trail was complete with improved roads, "cutouts", ferries & bridges to make the trip faster & safer every year.
gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The 1st to hear confirmed information of the gold rush were the people in Oregon, Hawaii, Mexico, Peru & Chile.1850, the population of Ca was over 110,000, not including the Californios or the California Indians.Few women came to Ca less than 10% of the population. By 1852 200,000 people came to Ca. The gold-seekers, called "Forty-niners" as a reference to 1849, which is the year President James Polk declared a gold rush, often faced substantial hardships on the trip.
pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). All but two of the Texian defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texans—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texan Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texans defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.

Sometime before God made man, God made Angels. Lucifer was the greatest of these. Soon he became prideful and rebelled against God. Michael and the good angels battled Lucifer and his bad angels. Lucifer was banished from Heaven. He is now called Satan or the Devil. He rules over hell. St Michael now protects us from Satan. He is one of the Archangels.
God as 3 divine persons- Father, Son,& Holy Spirit ,distinctly coexisting in unity as co-equal, co-eternal, & of one being The Trinity itself is a mystery of faith. God exists as 3 persons but is 1 God, meaning that God the Son & God the Holy Spirit have exactly the same nature or being as God the Father in every way. Whatever attributes & power God the Father has, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit have as well. Thus, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit are also eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinitely wise, infinitely holy, infinitely loving, omniscient.
God, spoke into existance all of creation in 6 days, the 7th for rest. Day 1 Light, Day/Night, 2 Skies, Water above/below, 3 Land & Sea/plants, 4 Sun/Moon/Stars, 5 Sea Creatures/Birds, 6 All Land animals/Man, 7 Rest/Sabbath/Blessings. Man & woman are created to be God's regents over his creation. God creating the first man formed from clay/dust & into whom he "breathes" the "breath of life". The first woman is formed from the side of the first man. God plants a garden "east of Eden" into which he places the first couple.
Eve listened to the serpent & ate from the tree of knowledge of good & evil. He told her she would not die but would be like God. After she ate, she gave the fruit to Adam, who ate. When God came, they hid from him and when he asked why they said they were naked & ashamed. God knew they had eaten from the tree. He sent them from the Garden of Eden to work & give birth in pain. They would get sick & die. He promised to send a new Adam, a savior so they could one day go to heaven.
Adam and Eve soon had children. 2 were Cain & Abel. Abel raised sheep while Cain raised produce. Abel would bring his best lamb as an offering to God. Cain would bring his less than perfect produce to offer to God. One day God cautioned Cain to be more like Abel. This made Cain angry/jealous. He killed Abel. When God asked Cain what happened, he lied to God. But God knew. God put a mark on Cain and he wandered the land for his food. He had no permanent place to live.
In his 500th year Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, & Japheth. In his 600th year God, saddened at the wickedness of mankind, sent a great deluge to destroy all life, but instructed Noah, a man "righteous in his generation," to build an ark & save a remnant of of each living thing from the Flood. After the Flood, the waters left & a rainbow appeared as a promise from God that he would never destroy the entire world again. Noah died 350 years after the Flood, at the age of 950.
Missouri Compromise
1820
Agreement put forward by Henry Clay that allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state & Maine to enter as a free state. The Compromise drew an imaginary line at 36 degrees 30 minutes N latitude, dividing the new Louisiana Territory into 2 areas, 1north &1south. All the Louisiana Territory north of this line was free territory, so any territories that became states from this area would enable African-Americans to be free. The Compromise also encouraged people in the north to return runaway slaves to their homes & did not prohibit slavery, even in the free territories.
Dred Scott Decision
1857
A ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that people of African descent brought into the United States & held as slaves (or their descendants, whether or not they were slaves) were not protected by the Constitution & could never be U.S. citizens. The court also held that the U.S. Congress had no authority to prohibit slavery in federal territories & that, because slaves were not citizens, they could not sue in court. Furthermore, the Court ruled that slaves, as chattels or private property, could not be taken away from their owners without due process.
American Civil War 1861-1865
11 Southern slave states seceeded from the US & formed the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy") to fight for independence. 20 (Northern) free states (slavery already abolished), & 5 slave states (border states) supported the federal government. These 25 states, referred to as the Union, had a larger base of population & industry than the South. After 4 years of warfare, mostly within the Southern states, the Confederacy surrendered & slavery was outlawed everywhere in the nation. Issues that led to war were resolved in the Reconstruction Era that followed the restoration of the Union.
Italian navigator & explorer. In 1497 discovered mainland of N America. Commissioned by Henry VII of England. 1st European to discover mainland N America since Vikings to Vinland in 11th century.
Patron of the arts, initiated the French Renaissance. Fought the spread of Protestantism, & supported the beginning of French exploration of the New World. Commissioned Jacques Cartier who with others claimed lands in the Americas for France & paved the way for the expansion of the first French colonial empire.1534 sent Cartier to explore the St. Lawrence River in Quebec to find "certain islands & lands where it is said there must be great quantities of gold & other riches." 1541 sent Jean-François de la Roque de Roberval to settle Canada and to provide for the spread of "the Holy Catholic faith."

Ruler of the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 & as Charles I, the 1st King of Spain. Heir of 3 of Europe's leading dynasties;Ruled domains in Central, Western, &S. Europe;& Spanish colonies in the Americas& Asia. Empire nearly 4million sq kilometers across Europe,Far East, & Americas. Devoted to Italian Wars against France. Role in opposing the Protestant Reformation. Pushed for convocation of the Council of Trent; began the Counter-Reformation. The Society of Jesus started. Divine mission to bring Christ to Americas. Charles provided 5 ships to Ferdinand Magellan. Cared for the Native Americans & opposed conquestador mistreatment. Lover of peace. "Not greedy of territory", wrote Marcantonio Contarini in 1536, "but most greedy of peace and quiet."
English sea explorer/navigator early 17th century. Made 2 attempts on behalf of English merchants to find a NW Passage to Cathay (China) via a route above Arctic Circle. Explored region around modern New York City area while looking for Western route to Asia for the Dutch East India Company. Explored the river which is now named for him, & foundation for Dutch colonization of the region. Discovered a strait & immense bay final expedition while searching for the NW Passage.1611, wanted to press on to the West, but most of his crew mutinied. Mutineers cast Hudson, his son & 7 others adrift. They were never seen again.
