How does the TIC work?
-Detects and translates infrared energy into visible light.

-Detects differences in relative surface temperatures.
What are the 3 categories of infrared emitters?
-(1) Passive emitters: inanimate objects; these objects primarily absorb and dissipate energy from active or direct emitters; generate no heat of their own (tools).

-(2) Active emitters: living organisms; give off infrared energy in low to medium strength and in varying intervals (victims).
- (3) Direct emitters: energy sources; give off constant high strength infrared energy (fire).
Thermal image interpretation?
-Black = absence of heat

-White = presence of heat (relative to the environment)

-Gray = something in between
When does thermal inversion occur?
-Occurs when the environment affects the shade of an object (image changes from light to dark or dark to light).

-Occurs when the ambient temp around an object rises above the temp of the object (ex: person in a hot room goes into a cold room).
How is thermal balance maintained?
Maintained with effective ventilation.
What is the 6-Point Scanning Technique?
-Shoulder to shoulder @ ceiling level.

-Shoulder to shoulder @ mid-level.

-Shoulder to Shoulder @ floor level.
What are scanning priorities?
-Heat sources (look for flames, hot spots, hot wires, etc.)

-Exits (look for a way out – look for contrast and shape)

-Victims (look for contrast and shape)
What does the thermal throttle do?
-Allows firefighters to pinpoint the hottest objects at a scene by coloring them blue.

-NOTE: Only available on newer cameras.
