Used for hypothyroidism and myxedema. Toxicity: tachycardia, heat intolerance, tremors, arrhythmias. |
Propylthiouracil
Inhibits peroxidase, inhibits organification of iodide and coupling of thyroid hormone synthesis and also inhibits 5'-deiodinase which decreases peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.
Used for hyperthyroidism. Toxicity: hepatotoxicity, agranulocytosis. |
Methimazole
Inhibits peroxidase, inhibits organification of iodide and coupling of thyroid hormone synthesis.
Used for hyperthyroidism. Toxicity: teratogenic, CI during pregnancy. |
