there is no etymology to help remember this. I looked up the latin root, reterere. The closest I could find in English is the root ret, which means "net" (totally unhelpful here, but you can see where Spanish got the word "red" for both net and internet from this "ret" prefix.). So we get retina from ret (not the same root as reterere.) So there is zero USEFUL ACTUAL information in here. Just a memory trick that de (the) retina will melt if you look in the oven too long. retina = derretir. |

guess what? you'll be mad and confused, but escama is a feminine noun. It comes from latin, not greek. the latin word is squama -- this makes total sense. Squamous cells are skin cells. you know why? because squama in latin meant scale.and squamous literally in English means "covered with or characterized by scales." But in anatomy, squamous refers to very thin, flattened skin cells. Also the flat portion of the temporal bone in the skull. Flat is key, here. scale or flake is key, too. |
