stock Flats
-stock height x stock width 6" intervals
-our theatre 12ft x 6ft 5in flat -Any stock that fits criteria for particular stock |
jog
less than 1ft wide
-wall jogs out -architectural/structural reasons |
Header
stock height and stock width ( more wide than tall)
-5ft 4 = header height -2ft -6 header width |
Stock Flat Wall
we don't use steel unless it's an absolutely permanent structure
-steel costs 4x as much it takes about 10x longer to build out of steel |
If flat is greater than 12 ft
use 1x4 (3/4" x 3 1/2")
-need the extra strength |
if 12ft or less
use 1x3 (3/4" x 2 1/2")
*if stock -we can get a 1x6 (3/4" x 5 1/2") and cut in half to get two 1x3 |
Flats can be any shape but they're usually rectangle.
.
Rails
top and bottom piece
Stiles
two side pieces
Toggles
horizontal supports in the flats
-every 4 feet |
You can but in 45s (corner braces)
to be sure of the support
Keystone
corner block = triangular
-made of 1/2 in plywood -9in x9 in -goes in 4 corners -we bring corner blocks 3/4 in inward |
Soft Cover
-covered with muslin
Hard cover
covered with luan/ utility plywood
Attaching the corner block to flat
using nails?
-use 3 penny nail we don't want the nail to stick out so we clinch the nail =bend it back over -glue corner blocks down using WOOD GLUE (yellow) -Don't water down wood glue |
Butt Joint
-make sure you're square
-fasteners on bottom two corners on corner block 2 fasteners on lower left above lower one. Another 2 above it. 1 in the middle between those two and the top left corner (repeat same on bottom of it) 3 sides should look the same. |
Keystone (continued)
-grain direction should run perpendicular with the joint
-2-3" x 7"-9" -cover with muslin -corrugated fastner --only used on hard covered flats --placed on the side that gets the luan --squiggly looking things |
Soft Cover vs. Hard Cover
.
Hard cover
It's hard to tear through with luan covered
more durable 4ftx 8ft sheets |
Soft Cover
Lighter
Muslin
-Can get in large sizes
-nice to paint -But it tears and gets damaged easily |
If you are putting Muslin on a frame
we have to inset keystones and everything else 3/4 of an inch.
-We put glue on, then medium weight muslin since it is more durable. -lay the flat down with keystones and corner blocks on the floor -then we get the muslin, we want it a foot longer than the flat -salvage edge --the hard edge created during manufacturing Use White Glue -water it down about 20% -makes easier to brush -glue perimeter only -don't glue toggles |
3D scenery
-any weight supporting scenery
Platforms
adding height to the stage to have different levels to add to the show
-opportunities for different staging/ pictures |
Stock Platform Sizes like flats
4ft x 8ft (plywood comes in 4x8)
3ft by 8ft 2ft by 8ft 4x6, 3 x6, 2x6 4x4, 3x4, 2x4 |
Triangles
in same sizes
triangular direction of the triangle is based upon the hypotenuse 3x4 hypotenuse left a 4x4 can face any direction (don't get caught crossing horizontally) we add triangles to give shape frame it hollywood style -remember 3/8 in x 3 1/2 carriage bolt (random) -8x4 -2 rails @ 4 ft -2 styles @ 8 ft- (2T( =7'9") |
Stairs/ steps
.
Rise
always stays the same (once you set the size)
Tread
part your shoe goes on
Rise
part that goes up
-must be consistent |
nose
point of the stair
heel
part where tread and rise meet
carriages style step
-NOT for theatre
-not really strong if not steel or concrete -fancy looking |
Stringers
vertically facing wood perpendicularly connected to the treads
notch stringers
2x 12 and cut notches for tread and the rise right into it
-place tread on notch -used in home construction -can be made of plywood --BUT plywood has to have grain running horizontaly not along the width of the tread or else it will break. -needs internal supports of plywood to support every 1 1/2ft |
Post and Lintel
Standard Flat frame construction
-series of frames that get progressively taller/ shorter -rails and styles -toggle is vertical, not horizontal since the direction of weight is on the stairs -build on 1x4 -build cleats -allows us to build irregularly shaped stairs |
Acting area
any place an actor can sit
Union Actors
if ramp is greater than 7 or 8 degrees they will get paid extra
Rake
entire stage is angled
Ramp
just one section is angled
Good ramp
4.25 degrees
-every foot = 1 inch rise -ADA standard (American Disability Act) |
Build ramp
stock platform
-put legs on it -mark angle you want -take legs out, but them and put the cut side connected to the ramp |
Jo
Take keystone (1/4) inch plywood) and place along the back wall to place them together
-these keystones =scabs |
If we need to join flats
we use tight flap back hinges
=booking the flat |
Why book the flat?
If we need more room backstage
or if it's a touring show |
Caster
the entire assembly of a wheel
Fixed Based
in line caster
-only goes one way |
Swivel based
Casters that wheel's swivel
wheels
-Don't want steel
-want hard rubber |
How do we choose Caster
-they're rated to hold a certain weight
Casters
need to be on same plane
-never attach directly to the platform top |
Jack Knife Staging
fliping scenes on front and back on platforms. One folding out from left and one from right.
Slip Stage.
Off stage scenery brought on and off
the revolve
turntable
-large circular platform that rotates -usually divided into thirds |
Nailers
Down at the bottom of the flat
-tight pin hinges |
Stiffener
attatch a piece of wood on the flat to keep it straight
-easy to screw through front side |
Hog trough
2 pieces of 1x stock joined at an L angle
-less prone to warp -can make it fairly long |
Triangular flat (jack)
angled flat
-3/4 height of the flat and base needs to be no less than 1/3 the height A 12ft flat would need a jack that's 9ft x3ft -tight pin hinges on both sides make it ridged -can weight down with sandbags |
Dutchmen
Gaff tape
2d scenery
non weight bearing
-backdrop |
3d scenery
weight bearing
