Arbor
two steel plates separated by steel rods
we stack weights inside of it
attached to the arbor is the purchase line: goes up to the headblock, then down to the stage floor through a tension block and loops back around into the arbor
Rope Lock
Squeezes the rope to keep it from moving
Single Purchase Counterweight system
One to one, pound for pound needed on the arbor as is on the batten
the pipe will move a foot for every foot the batten moves
Double Counter Weight System
For every pound you need two pounds
attached to the grid

PAINT
3 components
Vehicle: what allows us to smear the paint
water or oil that dries off of the surface, oil not good,only used for gloss. (takes forever to dry)

Binder: glue that holds the paint to the wall. Usually synthetic, gelatin smells horrible

Pigment: just the color
We prefer (in paint)
Acrylic over oil and latex
can be 10 parts water to 1 part paint (very expendable)
Doesn't build up too many layers
Chroma
pure pigment. If not pure Chroma, it will not look right on stage

Hue, Chroma, & Value

Hue: name of color (baby blue)
Chroma: Purity of pigment
Value: Light to Dark ratio

Inorganic
Need special dyes
Aneline Dye - carcinogenic (only used in scenery)
Paintbrushes
Bristles, The Handle, and the Ferrule (no paint on dis trick)
Types of Brushes
Lay-in Brush
Usually really wide (3-4 inches)

Sash Brush
Long and thin, with a diagonal shape on the bristles
used for windows (a sash is part of a window)
hold like a pencil

Artist Brush
Super long and skinny, round handle
Paint Roller
dont paint well
Cross hatching = x motion
used to paint the floor or hard flats

Natural and synthetics
Hold a lot of paint
Natural = expensive

Flashpot
devise that holds igniter and explosive materials
o If you’re going to generate a cloud of smoke, flash, or bang of whatever sorts, you need to warn everyone that you are going to do this!
o Everything has to be fire approved!
o Put something around your igniter
o Put a steel mesh ontop of what you have around the igniter (MUST BE STEEL!)
• Use window screen
o For BOOMS! Use powder with a loud report, or flash powder for flames
Water on Stage
comes from a faucet
gravity tank, water bucket above faucet that drains into a catcher
Closed System
Freshwater
Have to run a garden hose from a sink with another hose returning it to the source
use bucket and well for clean water
OPEN SYSTEM
Atmospherics
Rain - have a pipe with holes and cap at the end, run a hose to it and voila, or have showerheads

Snow - use a snow cradle, loop muslin, slit holes down to middle, put in form of plastic. Fly operator lowers and raises = snowstorm
Haze
water droplets suspended in air
makes our vision blurry and makes audience members cough
Smoke
water particles are heated up and made to rise
Fog
Water droplets are chilled to fall lower
o Dry ice is carbon dioxide
o Oxygen deprived = passing out
o Dry ice will burn you!
o Not poisonous
