Aposiopesis
Aposiopesis- The speaker fails to complete his sentence, (seemingly) overpowered by his emotions
Ex: Though I know love often prevails, I simply can’t—
Asyndeton
Asyndeton- The omission of conjunctions to coordinate clauses, phrases, or words where conjunctions would normally be used
Ex: What can the sheepdog make of such simplified terrain—no hills, streams, bog walls, tracks?
Polysyndeton
Polysyndeton- The unusual repetition of the same conjunction (opposite of asyndeton)
Ex: It is a land with neither night nor day, nor heat nor cold, nor any wind, nor rain, nor hills nor valleys.
Ellipsis
Ellipsis- A word or phrase in a sentence is omitted though implied by the context
Ex: Elizabeth embraces Jonathan, and Jonathan, Elizabeth.
Inversion
Inversion- The usual word order is rearranged, often for emphasis or to maintain the meter
Ex: Too often are my comments ignored.
Parallelism
Parallelism- The repetition of identical or similar syntactical elements (word/phrase/clause)
Ex: Dark can represent evil; light may symbolize good.
