What is psychology?
It is the study of how we work, think, and act. It is not just the study of humans, but animals too. It is a science.
What is behavior and what are examples?
Behavior is anything an organism does. Mental processes (internal), subjective experiences (behavior-sensations), perceptions, dreams, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
Why do we study psychology?
To understand why people think, feel, and act as they do. It separates mere opinion from a conclusion based on observation.
Historical studies of psychology.
Buddha-sensations and perceptions combine to form ideas (India). Confucius- power of ideas and of an educated mind (China). Hebrew scholars- linked mind and emotino to the body (Isreal) most like what we believe today. Researchers thought it was peneal gland b/c it was at top of head.
What was the mind-body debate?
Socrates and Plato, as well as Descartes believed that the mind was separate from the body. Aristotle and Plato said that it was not separate. Descartes said that "animal spirits" flowed from the brain's cavities to nerves and muscles provoking movement. Memories formed and experiences opened pores in the brain where the "animal spirits" flowed. Bacon and Locke foresaw research findings that led to modern empiricism (knowledge forms over time). Locke wrote An Essay Concerning Human Understanding which what ended up supposed to be a 1 page letter for friends was a hundred page essay taking 20 years to write.
What did Wilhelm Wundt do?
December 1879, two men helped create first psych experiement. Ball hit platform and press telegraph key. measured time took to press key. Measure "atoms of the mind". Branched schools were structuralism, functionalism, Gestalt psych, behaviorism, and psychoanalysis.
Titcher?
Structuralism. Joined Cornell University faculty and introduced it. Made people introspect. Said there is one thing we know more about than any other thing and that is ourselves.
