What is the difference between ectotherms and endotherms?
Ectotherms=absorb external heat; more efficient
Endotherms=generate own heat through metabolic processes; they are less efficient at transforming energy because they lose it as heat.
What is some evidence that dinosaurs were endothermic? (hint: one organism)
Mei long= dino preserved in sleeping pose, meaning they tuck head in to preserve heat.
Discovered in 2004.
What is behavioral thermoregulation?
Cold blooded animals maintain their body temp by moving between hot and cold micro habitats. (ex lizard)
What is physiological thermoregulation?
If its too hot...increase blood flow to periphery; sweating, panting.
If its too cold...decrease blood flow to periphery; shiver.
Ex: counter-current heat exchanger, human thermostat
What is physical thermoregulation?
Insulation.
Darker colors.
What is a counter-current heat exchanger?
In tunas and sharks.
Heat is generated by swim muscles and retained in muscles.
Is an example of physiological thermoregulation.
What is a human thermostat?
In hypothalamus.
Negative feedback system.
Sweating and shivering.
Is an example of physiological thermoregulation.
What are the costs of endothermy?
Insulation: feathers, fur, fat layers.
Cooling systems: heat and water must be liberated (sweating, panting)
Fuel: need food and oxygen
