Conduction

Material must be in direct contact with each other. EX. heating of the metal of a pot on the stove. Occurs in solids.

Convection

transfer of energy by the motion of heated particles in a fluid. (liquids and gases)

Heat

the transfer of Ke from one material to another.

Insulators

Materials such as fleece or fiberglass, that do not allow heat to move easily through them.

Conductor

Solids, partcularly metals.

Radiation

Transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves.

Specific Heat

The amount of energy needed or required to raise the temperature of 1kg of material 1k.

Temperature

The measurement of the average Ke of the molecules in a material.

Thermal Energy

Total energy, including kinetic and potential energy of the particles that make up a material; is tranferred by conduction, convection, and radiation.

Calorimeter

Used to measure the specific heat of materials.
