Temperature

Is the measure of the degree of hotness of a body. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles within a sample of matter.

Heat

The transfer of energy across the boundary of a system due to a temperature difference between the system and its surroundings

Thermal Equilibrium

Zero net flow of thermal energy between the bodies. However, thermal energy is continuously moving back and forth between the two bodies.

Thermometric Properties

Is some property of a material that varies continuously with temperature.

eg. Volume of mercury in capillary tube.

Electrical resistance of a coil of wire.

The pressure of a gas contained in a fixed container

The emf generated when two dissimilar pieces of metal are connected.

Fixed point

Standard degree of hotness that can easily be reproduced.

Single temperature value at which a particular physical event takes place.

Lower fixed point is the temperature of pure melting ice.

Upper fixed point is the temperature of steam above boiling water.

Triple point of water

Is the temperature at which all three phases exist in Equilibrium 273.16K

Internal Energy

Sum of random distribution of the kinetic and potential energy of particles.

KE

A change in temperature means that there is a change in the kinetic energy of the particles.

Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its motion

PE

A change in state means that there is a change in the potential energy of the particles.

Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its state or position

Specific heat capacity

The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg to a substance by 1 K.

Heat capacity

The energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree

Finding SHC of lqd-Electric

Known mass of lqd is placed in a calorimeter.

The initial temp. of lqd is measured.

An electric current is then made to flow through the heating element for a length of time. Reading of I and V were taken.

During the heating period a stirrer is used to provide uniform heating of the lqd.

Final temp is recorded.

Finding SHC of solid- electric

Two holes drilled in the solid.

Initial mass of solid taken on electronic balance

Thermometer is placed in one and heating coil in the next.

A small amt of oil/glycerine is placed inside the hole with the thermometer to ensure that there is a good thermal contact between the thermometer and solid.

The initial temp of the solid is measured using the thermometer.

An electrical current is sent through the heating coil for a time. I and V readings are recorded. Final temperature is recorded

Melting and Boiling

When a substance it is melting or boiling the temperature remains constant, even though the substance is still being supplied with energy. Kinetic energy remains constant. The energy is being used to break bonds and the PE is increased .

Latent heat

The energy required to change the state of a substance

Specific Lh f

Measure of the heat energy required to melt a solid of 1kg without any temperature change . energy required to convert 1kg of substance from solid into liquid without a change in temperature

SLh v

Measure of heat energy required to vaporize a lqd

Energy required to convert 1kg of substance from a lqd to vapour without any temperature change

Boiling

A substance absorb energy and changes state from a lqd into a gas without a change in temperature
