Aloe vera plant or gel:
Cooling and healing Aloe vera soothes the inflammation of sunburn and common kitchen scalds and burns. Great protector against radiation burns, sunburn, acne, nappy rash, any external (and internal) ulceration. For dry skin conditions i.e. eczema, shingles, ring worm, stretch marks, liver spots.
Arnica gel or cream:
Arnica (Arnica Montana) flowers have anti-inflammatory and circulation-stimulating properties; the gel or cream is excellent for sore muscles, sprains, strains and bruises, back pain, joint pain. Do not apply arnica to broken skin.
Anti-viral homoeopathic drops (LM 3)
10 drops every 30 minutes for 3 hours then 2 hourly for colds, sore throats, flu or any signs of wind heat or wind cold. Combine with Immune Boost (LM 8) especially if patient is generally run down.
Calendula-comfrey salve:
Blossoms of Calendula officinalis have astringent, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Suitable for burns or scrapes, skin rashes, or any problems, cuts, grazes, Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) contains a compound that stimulates the growth of new tissue and helps heal wounds.
• Castor Oil
Topically it is a great anti-inflammatory and can reduce swelling and healing time. Use for any strained muscle, twisted ankle or chronic tendonitis, etc. Apply before bed, wrap in flannel and a protective plastic covering and leave on 6-8 hours. Acute gout, joint pains, arthritis, abdominal ache or pain, cramps, constipationi, swollen glands, etc.
Camomile tea bags
Matricaria recutita, gentle for children, mild sedative, antispasmodic. Excellent intestinal relaxant. Gas pains, spasms and spastic constipation, indigestion, period cramps or any abdominal cramps, pain. Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. As a cream/lotion soothes skin irritations. ‘Red eye’- acute bouts of itchy eczema, conjunctivitis, stye, tired eyes, children colic etc. Double strength: 2 teabags per cup of hot water or 2 tsp of loose flowers per cup.
• Cayenne pepper
(Capsicum minimum) tincture : a few drops in water for shock, fainting, myalgia, arthritic pains, stiffness, blocked nose, poor circulation. CAUTION VERY STRONG HERB Powder 1/8 teaspoon may be used.
• Detox homeopathic drops LM10
For acute bouts of gastroenteritis 'tummy bug' Take every 30 mins for 2 hours then 2 hourly.
Combine with LM 8
Echinacea tincture or liquid extract
It can be used for any type of infection. Liquid extracts are the most versatile because they can be used both internally and externally.
Ginger (fresh, capsules, tea bags or crystallized ginger
antispasmodic and gas-relieving properties of ginger (Zingiber officinale) soothe digestive upsets, i.e. nausea, indigestion- food being ‘stuck’, bloating, gas, cramps, any discomfort, etc. Ginger also has been proven to relieve motion sickness better than Dramamine, the conventional drug treatment.
Goldenseal capsules, tincture or powder
A powerful antimicrobial, goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is effective against a variety of microorganisms that cause traveller’s diarrhoea. The powder has antiseptic properties and can be sprinkled onto cuts or wounds to stop bleeding. Do not take goldenseal internally during pregnancy.
Lavender essential oil
Virtually an all-purpose remedy, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has sedative, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It is helpful for burns, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and wounds. For most people, lavender essential oil can be applied directly to the skin e.g burns. May be diluted 20drops to 50mls of base oil.
Rescue Remedy
(Bach Flowers)- Any stressful situation such as exams, driving test, presentation, funerals, births or any situation where a person feels “not themselves”, very useful in acute skin flare ups like eczema to calm the emotional distress, etc. Good for children to help sleep. If making up for children, omit the alcohol. Contains clematis, cherry plum, rock rose, star of Bethlehem, impatiens.
Slippery elm powder
Can be used to draw out splinters or dirt from cuts or scrapes and for treatment of acute diarrhoea. Also can help long term constipation. Shows versatility and intelligence of herbs!
Valerian tincture
The sedative properties of valerian (Valerian Officinalis) make it useful for relieving anxiety, insomnia and tension; it’s also a mild pain reliever.
Witch hazel extract
Distilled witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) has mild astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for insect bites and skin irritations. It’s also an excellent base for diluting essential oils for a variety of simple, topical herbal first-aid remedies. Do not take it internally
First Aid assessment
• Check for breathing and heart beat.
• Observe colour of patient, especially face and lips.
• Treat for shock; treat minor wounds or injuries, if knowledge permits.
• Do not give anything by mouth if there is a possibility of surgery.
• Be very cautious when moving anybody who has suffered a fall or accident. If they have a spinal or neck injury, moving the patient can be fatal.
• Wear gloves if at all possible when dealing with body fluids of the patient.
• Stay with patient until help arrives, hold patients hand.
• Reassurance essential.
• Touch important aspect of healing.
Abrasions and minor cuts
• Clean area with a herbal antiseptic to prevent infection and aid in healing. Use 4-5 drops of tincture of any of the following herbs in a little warm water or a decoction or an infusion of the herb: Tea tree, Hydrastis, Calendula, Commyphora, Hamamelis, Hypericum, Echinacea.
• If painful, bathe it regularly with diluted Hypericum tincture or an infusion of peppermint or lavender.
• Use a few drops of the following essential oils in water - they are antiseptic, pain relieving and healing: lavender, eucalyptus, geranium, peppermint, tea tree
• The following, used as ointments, are suitable for minor cuts and abrasions: Hypericum, Calendula, Symphytum, Rescue Remedy cream
• If the cut is quite deep apply pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. Elevate the limb if possible. If the sides are apart, bring them together firmly with the thumb and finger. Bind the wound together with a surgical tape and then apply a dressing and bandage. Seek medical attention quickly as a closing of the wound by other means may be necessary and the sooner this is done the better the cosmetic effect. If the cut or abrasion is minor it is best to leave it uncovered.
• Steristrips (paper stitches) are very useful and can prevent scaring. Correct application demo. will be given at lecture.
Insect bites
• To relieve pain and swelling, prevent infection and promote healing.

• Echinacea, myrrh, Calendula, Aloe vera
Burns and scalds
Treat for shock, replace fluids lost.
Immediately following the burn, place under running cold water for at least 5 minutes or until the pain subsides. Leave clothes in position. Give Rescue remedy. Do not put oil or butter or ointment on the burn. Every 15 minutes, apply a remedy to minimise the swelling and prevent infection. The 2 best herbs in my opinion are...
